Don't tell students at Stanford that their school is "the Harvard of the West." From their perspective, it is Harvard that is "the Stanford of the East." Founded in 1865, Stanford's mission was "to exercise an influence on behalf of humanity and civilization." Stanford is comprised of six separate schools; the School of Humanities, the School of Engineering, and the School of Earth Sciences offer undergraduate programs. Stanford ranks very highly for quality of undergraduate education, professors are accessible, and the university is very strong across all academic departments. In addition to a wide range of engineering, natural science, social science, and humanities programs, the university offers innovative majors such as Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law. Stanford faculty and alumni have founded many of America's leading hi-tech corporations, such as Google and Cisco; collectively they would be the 10th biggest economy in the world. Student participation in research is highly encouraged. Stanford has one major related to business, Management Science and Engineering. Its undergraduate engineering program is ranked #2 in the U.S. Stanford is located in Palo Alto, California, a very elegant and affluent town which is also home for many top tech companies such as Hewlett-Packard and Tesla. Palo Alto is 55 kilometers from San Francisco, arguably the most beautiful city in North America. Stanford's campus is huge, 3300 hectares, with lots of green grass parks lined with an astonishing 43,000 trees of 400 different species. Many campus buildings are built in a distinctive and eye-pleasing Spanish colonial style. Most students live on campus in one of 80 well-furnished dormitories or row houses. Some dormitories are devoted to special cultural themes, such as La Casa Italiana and Haus Mitteleuropa. About 15% of students live in one of the universities 28 fraternities and sororities. One of Stanford's most popular traditions is the annual Halloween Party at the Stanford Mausoleum, Leland Stanford's final resting place.

Students at Stanford are among the happiest and most contented in the world. The academic program is extremely rigorous, but without the competition at many other top schools. Students are incredibly smart, but also incredibly friendly and modest. And like at other elite universities, Stanford students "work hard, and play hard," weekend on-campus parties are popular. With over 650 student organizations, there is a club for just about anything a student could be interested
in. The Stanford "Cardinal" is a major sports powerhouse, having won 123 national championships in the 36 collegiate sports it competes in. But the highlight is the annual "Big Game" against the archrival University of California "Golden Bears."

If getting a world-class education while studying on a gorgeously beautiful campus, playing Frisbee among palm trees in sunny California, sounds good to you, Stanford should be at the top of your list. But getting in is very difficult, Stanford has the lowest acceptance rate of any college or university in America, so be sure to apply to some other schools.
